Chike makes some of the best love-themed songs in Nigerian music. That’s one of the reasons why Nigerians love him, and some of his songs like Running and Roju have become wedding classics across different regions. Yet, the man who is behind all these, Chike says marriage is a stupid step.

Chike’s Shocking Marriage Comment on WithChude

This was done during a candid chat on the WithChude podcast. The 32-year-old singer did not mince words. When asked about marriage, he laughed off the idea and explained why he has no intention of settling down soon.

In my personal opinion, I think it’s a stupid step to get married. That’s my opinion,” Chike said. He explained that,  “Especially if you are a music artiste whose career depends on women being attracted to you. Once you marry, that attraction looks like a crime. It can’t continue.”

His bluntness shocked many, considering that his entire music brand thrives on love. But Chike insisted he does not measure happiness by romance. For him, joy comes from financial security. He shared, “To be happy, to be honest, I need a lot of money.”

Why He Believes Marriage Hurts Music Careers

That honesty may sound weird, but Chike’s journey explains it. After graduating from university, he never imagined he would pursue music as a career. He sang casually, disturbing friends and family, until reality pushed him to chase it seriously. But the early days were anything but glamorous.

He recalled years of financial struggle when survival forced him into acting for about two years. “It was a tough part,” he admitted. “I had to start acting because music wasn’t paying.”

The toughest blow, however, came from friends he trusted. Chike shared a painful moment when he planned his first show, which cost less than ₦400,000 because many services came as favours.

From Struggles to Stardom — Chike’s Journey

According to him, he reached out to close friends he used to hang out with, expecting support. Instead, they ignored his calls. “I thought I deserved the respect of hearing ‘I don’t have it’ or ‘I can’t do it now,’” he said. “But some of them just stopped picking my calls. They cut me off.”

That turning point paved the way for a career that has since blossomed. Chike’s big break came in 2015 with Project Fame, before he shot to wider recognition as the first runner-up on The Voice Nigeria in 2016. Later that year, he released his debut single Fancy, marking the beginning of a steady rise that now places him among Nigeria’s beloved stars.

Irony of a Love Singer Who Avoids Love in Real Life

Still, the irony of Chike’s life remains: a man who writes some of Nigeria’s most cherished love songs has never confessed love in real life. In 2022, he revealed he had never said “I love you” to anyone because it made him feel vulnerable. “I get the feeling that if I say it, my bolz would shrink and disappear,” he joked at the time. “I’m just happy I get to sing it.”

Whether Nigerians agree with him on this or not, Chike obviously has no intention of playing by the script that his songs suggest yet. He sings about love, but in his life, money comes first, and marriage comes last.
