The Ondo State government has declared today, Friday, January 17, 2025, as a work-free day for public servants to enable them to participate in the Local Government elections scheduled for tomorrow, Saturday, January 18, 2025.

The election is to be conducted by the Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission (ODIEC) and is expected to be held across the 18 local government areas of the state. Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa urges all stakeholders to ensure a free, fair, and peaceful election.

Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa is a seasoned politician and businessman. Born on January 12, 1965, in Ilaje, Ondo State, Aiyedatiwa’s journey into politics began in 2011 when he joined the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), which later merged with other parties to form the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Aiyedatiwa’s rise to prominence was swift. He served as the federal commissioner representing Ondo State on the Board of Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) from 2018 to 2019. In 2020, he was selected as the running mate of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu in the Ondo State gubernatorial election. Following Akeredolu’s passing on December 27, 2023, Aiyedatiwa was sworn in as governor.

Under Aiyedatiwa’s leadership, Ondo State has witnessed significant developments. His administration has prioritized justice reform, with notable improvements in the state’s judicial system. Aiyedatiwa has also demonstrated his commitment to education, infrastructure development, and economic growth.

The upcoming local government elections are crucial, as they will shape the state’s governance structure and policy direction. As the people of Ondo State head to the polls, they will be choosing leaders who will work closely with Governor Aiyedatiwa to drive development and progress in the state.

The elections will be contested by various parties, including the APC and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Interestingly, the main opposition party, the PDP, has announced its decision to boycott the January 18 LG poll in the state.

Despite these challenges, Governor Aiyedatiwa remains committed to ensuring a free, fair, and peaceful electoral process. His administration has worked tirelessly to create an enabling environment for the elections, and the people of Ondo State are eager to exercise their democratic rights.

However, the challenges are real, and it’s uncertain whether his efforts will yield the desired outcome. The people of Ondo State are hopeful that their Governor will continue to prioritize their needs and work towards a brighter future for the state.
