The Federal Government, through the Federal Civil Service Commission (FCSC), has issued its strongest directive yet. This involves 3,598 civil servants, who were absent from the 2021 staff verification exercise. These civil servants are being called back for a fresh re-verification, or risk dismissal for allegedly holding fake appointment letters. The exercise is slated to take place from August 18 to August 28, 2025.

Why the 2021 Re-Verification Matters

This new round of application targets officers recruited between 2013 and 2020 who failed to appear during the first verification in 2021. The FCSC has made it clear that failure to participate now will be interpreted as intentional avoidance and evidence of falsified documents.

Ministries Most Affected by the Exercise

Most of the affected personnel are concentrated in the Ministries of Information (592 officers), Education (506), and Labour (440).

However, the verification process extends to over a dozen entities, including Agriculture, Defence, Justice, Aviation, Finance, Interior, and the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation. Some of these include Works (134), Industry and Trade (196), Health (158), Environment (237), Interior (24), Defence (28), and the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (36), among others.

According to a document from the commission, “all concerned officers are to check for their names on the Commission’s website, Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation’s website.

In addition, the document stated that affected persons are to “check the attached list sent to the Ministries for their names; officers who have been posted out of the Ministry, are on Secondment/Transfer out of the Ministry, or on Study leave, are to equally check the websites provided above; no further extension will granted any officer who fails to turn up for the exercise; any officer who fails to turn up for the exercise will be adjudged to be holding fake letter of appointment and is, therefore, deliberately staying away to avoid detection; those who have been to the Commission recently for the exercise, need not appear.”

List of Documents You Need For the FCSC Re-verification

It is important to show up on time armed with both original and photocopies of the following:

  • Appointment letters
  • Promotion letters
  • Gazette confirming appointment
  • Staff change letters
  • The July 2025 IPPIS payslip

These documents are essential in verifying the authenticity of your employment, ensuring that only legitimately employed civil servants remain on the government’s payroll. The commission emphasizes that no further extensions will be granted. Public service justification like transfers, secondment, or study leave will not exempt individuals.

Hence, they must still appear for the exercise, checking their names via the FCSC website, the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation (OHCSF) site and the notice boards in their ministries.

Moreover, those who have recently undergone a successful verification at the Commission are exempt and need not appear. In other news, Omoyele Sowore and Inihebe Effiong stormed the NYSC HQ to protest on behalf of ex-corps member, Rage. See video here
