Funke Akindele Marks Birthday With Announcement of December Movie Behind The Scenes
Funke Akindele turned 48 on Sunday, and used that opportunity to make the kind of announcement that only a seasoned storyteller could. The Nollywood film producer has unveiled her upcoming December film, Behind The Scenes, which is set to hit cinemas on Christmas Day 2025.
The announcement came as a heartfelt Instagram video during her birthday celebration, and it was as compelling as it was timely. She began simply with, “It’s my birthday today, and I feel so fulfilled. I’m graciously grateful to God for the grace to keep telling our stories” .
Then, without warning, the cinematic drumroll: “I’m using this special day to reveal my blockbuster movie, which premieres in December 2025, Behind The Scenes! Expect something intriguing, captivating, and powerful. This one is very close to my heart, and I can’t wait for you all to experience it. Thank you for always riding with me. The journey continues.”
Funke Akindele has come a long way on our journey to becoming, and a brief recount can’t capture the build-up behind her career. Many will recall how she first came under the spotlight through the UN’s teen sitcom I Need to Know. However, her 2008 comedy-drama film, Jenifa, shot her into the global scene.
The movie, Jenifa exploded her name into a household brand. Then came Jenifa’s Diary, an award-winning TV sitcom that’s been on air since 2015, picking up multiple AMVCAs for Best Actress in Comedy over the years.
As an actor, director and film producer, Funke Akindele has had decades before and behind the cameras. Hence, she’s one of the entertainers who can tell this story of what it looks like behind the scenes.

Expectedly, the love poured in from colleagues and fans alike. Eniola Badmus, one of her closest friends in the industry shared gratitude for their years of laughter. She called her a “playmate, gist partner, my safe place.” Also, Actor Tobi Makinde, one of her ardent mentees also praised Akindele her as a true trailblazer, luminary and exemplar of excellence.
The upcoming movie, Behind the Scenes isn’t the first of Akindele’s holiday blockbusters. In fact, the strategic release of movies like Omo Ghetto: The Saga, Battle on Buka Street, and A Tribe Called Judah, during this period contributed to her huge box office records. Everybody Loves Jenifa (2024) shattered records, and became the fastest Nollywood film to hit ₦1 billion at the box office. Her stories are gradually transcending just entertainment to be a core part of telling Nigeria’s stories to a global audience.
