Reno Omokri: Tinubu Saved Nigeria’s Economy, But Nigerians Are Too Entitled to See It

President Tinubu Saved Nigeria’s Economy — Reno Omokri Says Nigerians Are “Too Entitled” to Appreciate Him

Controversial political commentator and former presidential aide, Reno Omokri, has sparked a wave of reactions online after crediting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu with rescuing Nigeria’s economy from collapse. According to Omokri, many Nigerians are “too entitled” to recognise or appreciate the tough decisions the president has made since assuming office.

In a statement shared via his social media platforms, Omokri argued that Tinubu’s economic reforms, although painful, were necessary to prevent total economic disaster. He particularly pointed to the removal of fuel subsidy and the unification of the exchange rate as bold moves previous administrations failed to attempt.

“President Tinubu saved our economy,” Omokri said. “Unfortunately, we are too entitled to appreciate him.”

The former media aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan acknowledged that the country is going through hardship, but blamed much of the current economic stress on years of mismanagement under the Buhari administration.

“Tinubu inherited an economic time bomb from President Buhari. He chose not to pretend or delay. Instead, he defused it with policy decisions that hurt in the short term but are beneficial in the long term.”

Painful But Necessary Reforms

Since assuming office in May 2023, President Tinubu has rolled out a series of sweeping reforms. These include:

  • Fuel subsidy removal, which caused petrol prices to triple
  • Floating the naira, leading to sharp currency depreciation before a recent rebound
  • Tax and customs reforms aimed at improving revenue
  • A push for foreign direct investment and private sector-led growth

While these reforms have drawn applause from global financial institutions such as the World Bank and IMF, many Nigerians are struggling with inflation, job losses, and a rising cost of living.

Omokri’s defence of Tinubu stands in contrast to widespread public frustration, especially on social media where hashtags like #Hardship, #Tinubunomics, and #ReformPain frequently trend.

Public Reaction

Nigerians on X (formerly Twitter) were sharply divided over Omokri’s comments.

  • “Reno is simply doing PR for the government. Let him come buy food at the market like the rest of us,” one user wrote.
  • Another replied: “He has a point. These reforms are painful, but maybe necessary. We can’t keep borrowing to subsidize fuel forever.”

Critics also questioned Omokri’s changing political stances, noting that he has shifted from staunch criticism of the APC to occasionally defending Tinubu, who was a key figure in bringing Buhari to power.

Entitlement or Accountability?

Omokri concluded that Nigerians often expect miracles from leaders without understanding the sacrifices required for national rebuilding.

“We expect instant results, forgetting that leadership is not magic. The real magic is doing the right thing even when people hate you for it.”

As the Tinubu administration marks over one year in office, voices like Reno Omokri’s add to the growing debate: Is Nigeria on the path to recovery, or are citizens being asked to suffer needlessly?

Only time — and the next few quarters — will tell.
