Oando To Integrate AI Into Drilling Operations, Plans 5,000 Electric Buses For Lagos

Oando, one of Africa’s leading energy companies, has announced plans to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into its drilling operations. This initiative aims to leverage technology to enhance efficiency and optimize resource use.

Oando’s Group Chief Executive Officer, Wale Tinubu, made this known during an interview at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

“AI is a big game-changer,” Tinubu explained, highlighting its potential to make high-impact, cost-effective decisions in drilling operations. “By employing AI, we can predict outcomes based on historical data, ensuring we’re better prepared and more efficient in our next drilling campaign.”

Oando is not stopping at AI integration. In another bold stride towards sustainable transport, Tinubu revealed a partnership with the Lagos state government to introduce 5,000 electric buses into the city’s public transportation system. This move will help combat Nigeria’s carbon emissions, with gas serving as a transitional fuel to generate electricity for these buses. “Transport contributes 10% to global emissions,” Tinubu noted, “tackling public transport can potentially reduce emissions by 5% almost immediately.”

The electric bus initiative will start with a pilot project, focusing on transitioning from diesel or petrol to electric vehicles. He emphasized, “We’re using gas to create electricity for these buses, marking a significant step towards cleaner energy in Nigeria.”Oando has previously partnered with the Lagos State Government, signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in 2022 to roll out electric mass transit buses. This was part of a broader initiative to support Nigeria’s goal of reaching net zero carbon emissions by 2060, which included plans for constructing a local assembly plant for electric buses and providing training programs.

Tinubu also addressed the broader context of Africa’s energy needs. “Africa has 45% of the world’s population without access to electricity,” he stated, advocating for a just energy transition where gas plays a crucial role in the energy mix during this transition.

This is not the first time Oando has been in the news for promoting sustainable infrastructures. Oando has a history of championing Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) to drive Nigeria’s industrialization. Past examples include pioneering private sector gas pipeline development and the development of Independent Power Plants (IPPs) in Lagos. Oando Clean Energy Limited (OCEL), a subsidiary of Oando, leads multiple sustainable energy initiatives, including solar, wind, and other renewable energy projects across the country. For instance, they signed an MoU with the Cross River State Government for a 100-megawatt wind farm and the rollout of Electric Vehicles for mass transportation.

Oando’s is leading a broader industry shift towards cleaner, and smarter energy solutions with these initiatives. By deploying AI in drilling and significantly expanding electric vehicle infrastructure in Lagos, the company is taking the lead in how energy companies can innovate while addressing environmental concerns.
