International Women's Day 2025

March 8, 2025, marked the International Women’s Day (IWD) celebration globally. The theme for IWD 2025 is “Accelerating Action for a World with No Gender Bias”, which emphasizes the need for urgent and sustained action to achieve gender equality.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu marked the occasion with a speech, where he reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment. He emphasized the importance of women’s participation in decision-making processes, stating that his administration is committed to expanding women’s access to finance and ensuring equitable opportunities in all sectors.

President Tinubu also highlighted the need for education and economic empowerment of women, stating that these are critical factors in achieving gender equality. He encouraged women to take advantage of the various initiatives and programs put in place by his administration to support their empowerment.

First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu also launched her Renewed Hope initiative, which aims to support women’s empowerment programs across the country. The initiative focuses on providing training and economic empowerment opportunities for women, particularly in rural areas.

The National Council of Women Societies (NCWS) also marked the occasion with a press conference, where they praised the First Lady’s initiative and called for greater inclusion and empowerment of women in all sectors. The NCWS also announced plans to launch its own financial support initiative for women entrepreneurs.

In addition, the “Her Seat in Parliament and Governance Program” was also highlighted as an initiative aimed at increasing women’s representation in parliament and governance.

As Nigeria celebrates IWD 2025, it is also important to acknowledge the challenges that women in the country continue to face. The recent incident involving Senator Natasha Akpoti, who was allegedly harassed and intimidated by a group of men, is a stark reminder of the work that still needs to be done to achieve true gender equality.

Despite the setbacks, the IWD 2025 celebration in Nigeria serves as a reminder of the progress that has been made and the work that is still ongoing to promote women’s empowerment and gender equality. As the global community comes together to celebrate IWD, we hope that this year’s celebration will accelerate action towards achieving true gender equality and empowering women to reach their full potential.
