The political atmosphere in Osun State has been anything but quiet in recent weeks, as Governor Ademola Adeleke contends with swirling rumours of defection alongside ongoing disputes over local government leadership.

Defection Speculations Denied

Reports circulated across political circles suggesting that Governor Adeleke might be on his way out of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to join the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2026 election cycle.

However, Adeleke has dismissed these claims as “false, unfounded, and politically motivated.”

In a statement released by his media team, the governor reaffirmed his commitment to the PDP, promising to stay focused on delivering his five‑point development agenda to Osun people.

Political observers say the rumours may have been fueled by the intense pressure coming from opposition figures, including former Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola, who recently claimed there were overtures being made to woo Adeleke into the APC.

Local Government Leadership Crisis

Beyond the defection drama, Osun is also grappling with a heated dispute over local government administration.

Controversies arose after court rulings declared certain chairmanship positions vacant, yet some APC‑aligned figures reportedly continued to occupy offices. Governor Adeleke’s administration has insisted on following due process through the courts rather than resorting to force.

The PDP Governors’ Forum, led by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, recently weighed in, urging all parties not to turn Osun into a “wild wild west” and to respect the judiciary as the final arbiter in the ongoing tussles.

Achievements Amid Challenges

While the political drama unfolds, Adeleke’s government has continued to highlight its achievements.

Recent data shows that Osun State’s domestic debt has been reduced from ₦148.37 billion to ₦83.32 billion, while external debt dropped from $91.78 million to $75.14 million between December 2022 and the first quarter of 2025.

Major road projects, such as the dualisation of the Ila‑Orangun township road and ongoing works around Osogbo, Ikirun, and the Kwara border, are also underway.

In addition, the administration is planning a high‑level conference on the state’s O’Meals school feeding programme, aimed at improving sustainability and nutritional impact for schoolchildren.

The Road Ahead

Governor Adeleke’s tenure appears to be at a crucial juncture: while he celebrates financial reforms and developmental strides, he also faces intense political headwinds.

For now, Adeleke maintains that he is “PDP for life,” but the coming months, especially with elections on the horizon, will test both his political resolve and his ability to navigate Osun’s complex political terrain.
