After Humiliating Arsenal, Is The Carabao Cup Final That Of Newcastle United To Lose?

Newcastle United

So far, the Carabao Cup has been a hot stew of top EPL teams vying for the title. Big teams like Arsenal, Tottenham, and Liverpool have been pushing each other trying to clinch the title. However, after the Arsenal vs Newcastle loss on Tuesday, February 5, the Magpies are likely winners. Moreover, recent analytics place them as the favorite to lift the cup.

The semi-final second-leg win against Arsenal was a delight. The Newcastle team was tense following Arsenal’s 5-1 thrashing of Manchester City. Despite already having a 2-0 lead from the first leg, Arsenal was undoubtedly a menace. The match was only a couple of days after Arsenal made an embarrassment of Man City with a 5-1 win.

However, the Magpie relaxed after Jacob Murphy opened the game with an impressive rebound goal in the nineteenth minute. In the second half, Anthony Gordon finished what Murphy started and sealed the team’s 2-0 win. Post-match, Gordon replicated the jibe Arsenal fans did to Erling Haaland saying “Stay humble”.

Newcastle United is one step closer to the Carabao title and ending the 56 years of not winning any major titles. The last time the club hoisted a silverware was in 1969 at the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup. But after a cumulative 4-0 win against Arsenal, they might be looking at a golden chance to the barren years. Let’s see what a Carabao win would mean for the club and the last lap before the clinch for the win.

What does the Carabao Cup Win mean for Newcastle United?

If Howe and his players win the Carabao Cup, they ascend to a legendary status. While the cup isn’t exactly the top priority of most EPL clubs, it would mean so much for the team. One of the ways the club would benefit would be a little financial boost. Also, the win can fuel the Champion League’s ambitions for the club. The club owners have spoken about wanting their participation. The win would be a boost from all angles, from morale to better findings for instrumental transfers ahead of next season.

How Does Newcastle United Compare to Their Next Match-Up?

Newcastle is expected to face either Liverpool or Tottenham at Wembley Stadium on March 16. Liverpool currently tops the English Premier League and Champion League and has been in their best form. They have only suffered about three losses this football season altogether.

However, Tottenham has not been in their best form. In the EPL, they have more losses than wins which places them at 14th position below Manchester United. Even when you compare the performance of both teams against each other, the stakes are in Liverpool’s favor. The club has 29 wins against Tottenham in the last 57 matches.

However, Tottenham has been performing a lot better in away matches. Also, it is worth noting that Tottenham is currently ahead with a 1-0 win in the semi-final first leg. We have to wait to see what the Carabao Cup semi-final has to offer.

Depending on who wins the semi-final second-leg on February 6th, Newcastle has a varying chance of lifting the cup. The club has shown less performance with recent head-to-head matches against Liverpool. But Newcastle has had better form against Tottenham, winning their last two matches against them. Fans have their fingers crossed as they hope Newcastle’s defensive style and clinical finishes get them the cup with Gordon and Murphy leading the way.
