Dino Melaye Resigns, Says PDP Has Failed Nigerians

Dino Melaye, former senator representing Kogi West, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing the party’s failure to provide credible leadership and meet the expectations of Nigerians. In a letter dated July 4, 2025, but made public on Thursday, July 31, Dino announced his departure from the PDP, ending years of active involvement at various levels within the party.
The letter, which was addressed to the PDP Ward Chairman in Ward 1, Aiyetoro Gbede, Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State, detailed Dino’s growing disillusionment with the party’s direction. “I hereby tender my resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party at all levels of involvement,” he wrote. “This decision has become imperative due to the lack of potency and capacity by the party to deliver the Nigerian people from the prevailing political cankerworms that have eaten deeply into the fabric of our dear nation.”
Dino, who was the PDP’s gubernatorial candidate in the 2023 Kogi State election, added that his exit followed a long period of reflection on the party’s leadership and overall trajectory. According to him, remaining in the PDP under its current state would be a betrayal of his conscience and what he believes Nigerians deserve.
“Having carefully reflected on the state of the party, I can no longer in good conscience participate in the activities of the parties or lend my support to her agenda,” Dino’s letter read.
His resignation comes at a time when internal cracks within the PDP continue to deepen. While Dino did not indicate his next political move or if he plans to join another party, the timing of his exit, just two years ahead of the 2027 general elections has sparked speculation across political circles.
Observers familiar with Dino’s political journey say this decision could signal yet another significant turn in his ever-dramatic public life. Known for his fiery rhetoric and sometimes theatrical displays in both media and politics, Dino has built a reputation as one of Nigeria’s most outspoken politicians. His relationship with the PDP, though strong at various points, has also been turbulent at times, especially during intra-party disputes and campaign controversies.
The resignation letter ended on a formal note, with Dino expressing appreciation for the platform and opportunities the PDP once offered him. “Thank you for the opportunity to serve under the platform during my period of membership,” he wrote.
While reactions to Dino’s announcement are still unfolding, early responses reflect mixed emotions. Some loyalists to the PDP have described his exit as unfortunate but not surprising, especially given his previous clashes with party leadership. Others argue that Dino’s departure is a reflection of a broader issue, namely, the loss of public trust in major political parties to enact real change.
Political analysts suggest that Dino’s move might be strategic. His history of switching parties, having previously been affiliated with both the PDP and the All Progressives Congress (APC) has often been aligned with shifts in the national political climate. Whether this latest move is part of a bigger plan to remain relevant in the run-up to 2027 is yet to be seen.
Meanwhile, the PDP has not issued an official statement in response to Dino’s resignation at the time of filing this report. However, sources within the party suggest that leadership may attempt to reach out in a last-ditch effort to prevent further high-profile defections.
In a political space where loyalty is often short-lived and party switches are common, Dino’s decision is both unsurprising and yet still significant. As Nigerians continue to demand more from their leaders, it remains to be seen how Dino’s political story will evolve from here and what implications it might have for the party he just walked away from.
