Two Years in Office: Buhari Praises Tinubu, Atiku Responds with Sharp Criticism

As President Bola Ahmed Tinubu marks two years in office, the country’s political landscape has been stirred by a mix of commendation and criticism—most notably from two of Nigeria’s most prominent political figures: former President Muhammadu Buhari and opposition leader Atiku Abubakar.

In a statement released from his hometown in Daura, Katsina State, former President Buhari praised Tinubu for what he described as a “focused and resilient leadership” in the face of Nigeria’s persistent challenges.

“Leading Nigeria is no easy task. I commend President Tinubu for the stability he has maintained, particularly in the areas of security and infrastructure. Governance is a relay race, and he is carrying the baton with determination,” Buhari said.

Buhari also noted that while economic pressures remain, Tinubu’s administration has shown “political will” in tackling subsidy reforms, unification of the exchange rate, and improving oil sector governance—moves he referred to as “painful but necessary.”

Atiku Responds:

“A Presidency of Pain and Propaganda”

But the praise was swiftly countered by a scathing response from former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who ran against Tinubu in the 2023 general elections under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Speaking through a press release issued by his media team, Atiku lambasted the Tinubu administration as being “more concerned with image than impact,” accusing it of deepening economic hardship and failing to deliver on campaign promises.

“Two years of Bola Tinubu’s presidency have brought more pain than progress. The cost of living is out of control, insecurity has mutated, and the average Nigerian is worse off than in 2023. This is not governance—it is propaganda,” Atiku declared.

He also criticized the government’s handling of the naira devaluation, subsidy removal, and the growing debt profile, arguing that these decisions have hit the poor the hardest.

Mixed Reactions Nationwide

Across Nigeria, reactions to Tinubu’s mid-term performance are sharply divided. While some citizens applaud the government’s efforts in infrastructure renewal and political reforms, others decry the economic realities—rising inflation, food insecurity, and the worsening state of public welfare.

Analysts say Tinubu’s ability to navigate the next two years will be critical to shaping his legacy—and his party’s chances in the 2027 elections.

With political tensions rising and public sentiment fluctuating, the second half of Tinubu’s presidency promises to be even more closely watched.
