Ibrahim Chatta Says He's Not Interested in the AMVCAs

Veteran actor, Ibrahim Chatta has shared that he is not interested in the AMVCA.

The Nollywood film star disclosed this in a recent interview on Adebayo Ridwan “Bae U’s” YouTube show, Curiosity Made Me Ask.

This question was prompted by his history of little or no recognition from the award show. The 2025 Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards was held  on Saturday, 12 May. The award show unsurprisingly created a buzz online from the announcement of winning actors. As usual, the glitz and pomp from the glamorous fashion pieces worn by the attendees also had the AMVCA trending on every corner of the internet.

The Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards prides itself in being an institution that recognizes outstanding achievements in film and television. However, its history of not recognizing certain acts and works, particularly in Asabawood, has been a subject of controversy.

In Ibrahim Chatta’s case, his disinterest in the award show stems from their being uninvited. This disclosure had been a result of the prompt by the show’s host, Bae U, who told the legendary thespian to pray to receive an award. However, Chatta stated,

Why would I pray for something that I’m not interested in? They didn’t invite me”

Ibrahim Chatta’s acting career began in the mid-1980s, spanning four decades in the entertainment industry. Given his talent and influence, one would consider him eligible to be invited for such an award show. Sharing his thoughts, the actor said,

I ask myself why I haven’t even been invited, because I see younger people going. Maybe it’s because I’m not a very social person”.

However, he also mentioned that he has not submitted any film for consideration, implying that as a reason for being invited. Chatta stated that,

Whenever I am interested in going to the AMVCA, I would make a film and submit that film so that I can be rated and so that they can check to see if I deserve the award or not. But I’ve not given them any film to nominate me for”.

For the 2025 AMVCA, the 54-year old entertainer was nominated in one of the top categories – Best Lead actor for his role in Bolanle Austen-Peters’ House of Ga’a (2024). However, he lost the winning spot to a fellow veteran, Femi Adebayo, who took the award home for his recent Netflix series, Seven Doors (2025).

The 2025 AMVCA nominations were packed with strong contenders in the same categories, and this win was only one out of many.

The music awards also had a similar situation, when top Afrobeats stars like Davido, Burna Boy, Tems, Ayra and Rema were nominated in the same category
