“All Nigerians must be enrolled in NIMC before the end of the year” says the Director-General of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Abisoye Coker-Odusote.
She announced this during a press briefing in Abuja on Thursday, May 15, 2025. Coker-Odusote stated that the commission has successfully enrolled over 120 million Nigerians into the national identity database.
While emphasizing the significant progress made, the Director-General highlighted the ongoing commitment of NIMC to ensure that more Nigerians are captured in the national identity database before the end of the current year (2025). She expressed optimism about achieving this goal, noting that the enrollment capacity has been expanded from 100 million to 250 million.
Coker-Odusote outlined several strategic initiatives being implemented to facilitate wider enrollment. These include decentralizing the enrollment process by extending services to ward levels, making it easier for citizens, particularly those in remote areas facing logistical challenges, to register. This move aims to ensure nationwide inclusion and accessibility to the National Identification Number (NIN).
Furthermore, she mentioned the collaboration with private sector partners, known as Front End Partners, under the Digital Identification for Development (ID4D) project supported by the World Bank. This partnership is intended to accelerate the enrollment process across the country.
Beyond the enrollment drive, the Director-General also announced the launch of a new self-assist modification platform. This online platform will allow individuals who have already registered to update their records themselves, thereby reducing the congestion at physical registration centers.
The push for mass enrollment is part of the Nigerian government’s broader efforts to establish a comprehensive and reliable national identity system. The NIN is increasingly becoming a prerequisite for accessing various services, including banking, telecommunications, education, and government benefits. The government aims to leverage the national identity database for improved security, social planning, and economic development.
Coker-Odusote’s statement underscores the urgency and importance the government places on enrolling all Nigerian citizens into the NIMC database within the specified timeframe. The initiatives announced are geared towards overcoming logistical challenges and making the enrollment process more accessible to all Nigerians, regardless of their location. The collaboration with the World Bank-backed ID4D project further indicates the government’s commitment to investing resources and leveraging partnerships to achieve universal national identity coverage.
In summary, the Director-General of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Abisoye Coker-Odusote, who declared the mandate for all Nigerians to enroll in NIMC before the end of 2025, emphasizing the ongoing efforts and new strategies being implemented to achieve this nationwide registration.
