Tinubu Meets With Fubara, Wike and Rivers Lawmakers For a Truce

President Tinubu Hosts Peace Meeting With Fubara, Wike, and Rivers Lawmakers

The Nigerian government is finally taking a step towards peace with the President Bola Tinubu convening a closed‑door meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on June 26, 2025, with suspended Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

On Thursday, June 26, the President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu convened a closed‑door meeting at the Presidential Villa with the governor in attendance, alongside FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, Speaker Martins Amaewhule and other lawmakers from Rivers State.

The meeting is part of ongoing reconciliation efforts following the state of emergency declaration in March.

The declaration had Tinubu suspending Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and the entire state House of Assembly indefinitely, citing escalating insecurity and their inability to cooperate effectively.

Interestingly, the pictures from the meeting reflect a warm atmosphere, with images showing Tinubu, Fubara, and Wike smiling and sharing handshakes.

This perception of a truce was validated by Wike, who said to journalists on Thursday Night that,

We have all agreed to work together with the governor, and the governor also agreed to work together with all of us. We are members of the same political family”.  He spoke further, “Yes, just like humans, you have a disagreement, and then you also have a time to settle your disagreement, and that has been finally concluded today, and we have come to report to Mr. President, that is what we have agreed. So for me, everything is over. The minister went on to enjoy political supporters to promote unity and peace, as “there’s no more acrimony”.

Wike’s comments are proof that the dispute between the presidency and Fubara is indeed resolved. Recall that in March, Wike had pushed for Fubara’s impeachment, with the FCT minister himself voicing his indifference if the House of Assembly approves the governor’s impeachment.

He has also been highly vocal about his disapproval of Fubara’s leadership. According to him,

The Assembly has the power to decide his fate.” Wike also said. “I am not a member of the Assembly, but if they choose to impeach him, that’s their call.”

Later, President Tinubu invoked Section 305 of the constitution to declare a state of emergency in Rivers State, citing escalating insecurity and political instability that jeopardized state governance. A military administrator, retired Vice-Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, was appointed to steer the state until civil order is restored.

Hence, this intervention is a great move to resolve the differences between  the presidency, Wike and his former protégé Fubara. This is not the first attempt at reconciliation, as the President mediated a fragile truce in December 2023.

Yet, the crisis re-emerged, culminating in the emergency declaration. This latest effort is expected to help Rivers’ restore normalcy and peace.
