Ganduje Named FAAN Board Chairman by Aviation Minister Keyamo
Former Kano State Governor and ex-APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje has officially taken on a fresh national assignment as he steps into the role of Chairman of the Board of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).
The move, announced by Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development Festus Keyamo, marks a new chapter in Ganduje’s political journey and comes only days after his dramatic resignation as chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress.
Keyamo, who unveiled Ganduje and other board members during an inauguration ceremony in Abuja on Wednesday, said the new leadership must steer FAAN through its complex challenges from aging infrastructure to evolving global aviation trends.
Speaking at the event, the minister stressed that the expectations are high. “As we inaugurate this new board, we carry the weight of expectation that we must continue to foster an environment where aviation can thrive, connect diverse regions, and promote socioeconomic development across our nation,” Keyamo told attendees.
The minister’s comments come at a time when Nigeria’s aviation sector is under renewed scrutiny to meet modern safety standards, boost passenger experience, and compete globally.
Who are the Officials on the New FAAN Board?
Ganduje isn’t alone at the table. Other key names on the newly inaugurated board include Ms Olubunmi Kuku, who serves as Managing Director of FAAN, along with Ms Dorothy Duruaka, Ahmed Ibrahim Suleiman, Nasiru Muazu, Omozojie Okoboh, TP Vembe, and Bridget Gold, who was sworn in as board secretary.
Keyamo charged the board to support FAAN’s executive management and deliver on its critical mandate, as outlined in the Federal Airports Authority Act. He made it clear that these appointments aren’t ceremonial.
“You are not merely figureheads; you are the architects of our aviation future. Your role demands a meticulous approach to governance, a commitment to transparency, and an unwavering dedication to the principles enshrined in the Federal Airports Authority Act,” he said.
Ganduje’s Pledge: Service Delivery and Global Standards
Responding to his appointment, Ganduje promised that the board under his watch will operate within its statutory limits, avoiding unnecessary clashes with FAAN’s executive management or the Ministry. He also pledged that his team would prioritize world-class service delivery in Nigeria’s airports, an area where travelers and stakeholders have long demanded improvements.
“There is no doubt we will study the Act of FAAN in order to see our boundary, so that we do not exceed our boundary,” Ganduje told the gathering. “At the same time, we do not exhibit mediocrity by not doing what we are expected to do.”
Ganduje acknowledged that the aviation sector demands high standards and coordination with multiple stakeholders, both locally and internationally. “Service delivery is becoming more and more complicated because there are so many stakeholder institutions. We must be conscious of Nigeria as a country that is a leading country in Africa. Therefore, we must exhibit our services to the best international standards.”
The Next Level for Nigeria’s Aviation Sector
Observers say the appointment of a political heavyweight like Ganduje signals that the federal government wants tighter oversight and faster reforms in the aviation sector. With Nigeria positioning itself as a hub for regional air travel, issues like passenger safety, airport upgrades, and operational transparency remain top priorities.
Keyamo, known for his direct style, didn’t mince words: the new board’s performance will be measured by its impact on everyday Nigerians, not just profit margins. “The success of FAAN is not measured merely by financial growth but by the impact it has on the lives of ordinary Nigerians,” he told the board members.
