The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced that the recently conducted 2025 UTME is being reviewed.
This development follows a series of complaints and outcry from the public over perceived discrepancies in the results. Recall that JAMB announced that a staggering 78% of candidates scored below 200, which is the average UTME score for admission in most Nigerian universities. According to JAMB’s result analysis shared on X, about 1,955,069 candidates sat for the 2025 examination, and only 17.11% scored 200-250. Also, it was recorded that 12,414 candidates managed to score 300 and above, amounting to 0.63% of the candidates.
Records of failure in the United Tertiary Matriculation Examination is not a new occurrence. However, the 2025 results have sparked reactions from disgruntled families, candidates and regular users. For many, the large number of scores below 200 seemed unusual. Additionally, families raised questions about their wards, questioning the credibility of the scores because of the abilities of their children.
Oluwaseun on X shared a screenshot of a candidate’s result. The student had scored 294 in 2024, but the new result for this year’s UTME was 132. Seun expressed his concerns, saying, “These scores do not reflect the abilities, efforts, or track record of our students”. This is because many others also experienced a similar issue.
A father and his daughter have also been trending for their recent video, where the daughter expresses her disappointment in the score that she got. In her words, “all the mock exams I’ve written, I never got below 250. It’s very surprising and shocking that JAMB can give me a score of 155”. Her father also said, “This is to confirm my daughter’s words. In the centre where she did this examination, she said she was logged out two times. My daughter has never been a dull student. She prepared so well for it.”
Despite these, a spokesman for the board maintained the integrity of JAMB. He stated that “For us and the system we run, this is a reflection of their performance”. Furthermore, he mentioned that “most brilliant candidates fail exams at times because of overconfidence”. However, Alex Onyia, the CEO of Educate has set out to prepare a lawsuit against JAMB, with evidence from the list of affected candidates. So far, 8000 students have submitted their complaints. The demand is for JAMB to show the students their mark sheets. Additionally, a public interest law firm by Evans Ufeli is now demanding the cancellation of the UTME results and requesting a fresh examination.
These are only a few out of the many complaints and reactions that the examination board has received in the past one week. Hence, JAMB’s promise to review the results. This announcement was made on Monday, 12th May by Fabian Benjamin. His statement promised that the board is ‘’fast forwarding the annual system review” to identify and rectify any technical issues.
