Former Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, has broken his silence on reports suggesting he is planning to defect from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Statement From Tinubu-Ambode Support Group

In a strongly worded statement released through the Director-General of the Tinubu-Ambode Support Group, Ambode dismissed the claims as “false, baseless, and mischievous.” He insisted that the rumours were the handiwork of political mischief-makers determined to sow disunity and confusion ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“I have not held any discussions with the ADC or any other political party about any political ambition,” Ambode said. “I remain a committed member of the APC and loyal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.”

The former governor further praised President Tinubu as a “proven achiever” whose leadership has brought about significant reforms and governance improvements, not only at the state level in Lagos but now across Nigeria. Ambode pledged to continue working in alignment with the APC’s mission, stressing that party loyalty and unity are vital to sustaining progress.

Ambode’s Political Background in Lagos APC

Ambode served as governor of Lagos State between 2015 and 2019, succeeding Babatunde Raji Fashola. During his tenure, he championed infrastructural expansion, urban renewal projects, and improved public services.

Loss of APC Ticket to Sanwo-Olu in 2019

However, his bid for a second term in 2019 was unsuccessful, as he lost the APC ticket to Babajide Sanwo-Olu, a candidate backed by powerful political structures within the state. Despite this setback, Ambode has remained largely silent on political issues, keeping a low profile in public affairs.

His recent reaffirmation of loyalty to the APC is particularly significant given that he has not held any major political office or been at the centre of party activities in recent years. This declaration appears to be a strategic move to reinforce his political relevance within the ruling party.

Why Defection Rumours Emerged Ahead of 2027

Defection rumours often surface in the run-up to elections, especially involving influential political figures who may still hold grassroots appeal. In Ambode’s case, his record as governor and his association with various development initiatives make him a potentially attractive recruit for opposition parties seeking to weaken the APC’s dominance in Lagos.

Grassroots Appeal and ADC Speculations

Speculation about his possible move to the ADC  a smaller but active opposition party  gained traction in some political circles. The rumours intensified online, sparking debates among Lagos residents and political analysts about his potential influence in the 2027 race.

By swiftly rejecting these claims, Ambode has attempted to neutralise any political narrative that could paint him as disloyal or in opposition to the party’s current leadership.

Implications for the APC

Ambode’s open pledge of loyalty to President Tinubu is not just a personal statement  it also serves as a signal to the APC’s power base in Lagos and nationwide. Lagos remains the APC’s political stronghold, and unity among its prominent figures is key to maintaining that status in 2027.

Tinubu’s Enduring Influence on Former Allies

His reaffirmation could help consolidate the party’s image of internal cohesion at a time when defections from other parties are making headlines. It also underscores President Tinubu’s enduring influence over political figures he once mentored or worked alongside.

Looking Ahead – What Lies Ahead for Ambode

While Ambode has not publicly declared any political ambition for 2027, his decision to publicly align himself with the APC and its leadership keeps the door open for future roles within the party. Whether as a policy adviser, political strategist, or even an electoral candidate, his political journey remains one to watch.

For now, his message is clear: he is staying put in the APC and standing firmly with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu  a stance that may shape both his legacy and his role in the unfolding world of politics
