The movie industry is a global phenomenon, captivating audiences and transporting them to new worlds. With the recent recognition by UNESCO as the world’s second-largest film industry, Nigeria’s Nollywood is taking its rightful place on the global cinematic stage. The numbers are impressive: in 2024, for every 100 cinema tickets sold, 49 were for Nollywood films, 50 for Hollywood, and 1 for Bollywood. With an estimated annual revenue of N522 billion, Nollywood’s potential is undeniable.

From Hollywood’s blockbuster franchises to Bollywood’s song-and-dance spectaculars, each country brings its unique flavor to the cinematic table. But what sets these countries apart, and why do they deserve a spot on my list?

As a film enthusiast, I’ve compiled my top 5 countries in the movie industry.

The United States

The United States is home to the world’s largest film industry, with Hollywood producing over 700 films annually. From iconic franchises like Star Wars and The Avengers to critically acclaimed indie films, Hollywood’s cinematic empire has a global influence that’s hard to match. With its state-of-the-art special effects, diverse talent pool, and innovative storytelling, the United States is the undisputed leader in the movie industry.

Nigeria

Not because it’s my country but over the years, Nollywood has emerged as a force to be reckoned with, producing hundreds of films annually. With a focus on African stories and culture, Nollywood’s films have resonated with audiences across the continent and beyond. From The Wedding Party to Everybody Loves Jenifa and Seven Doors, Nollywood’s films are making waves globally, showcasing the country’s rich cultural heritage and cinematic prowess.

South Korea

South Korea’s film industry has gained international recognition, with films like Squid Game, Parasite, and Train to Busan winning global acclaim. With its unique blend of genres, from K-pop musicals to Korean horror, South Korea’s cinema has become a major player on the world stage. The country’s focus on innovative storytelling, stunning visuals, and social commentary has captivated audiences worldwide.

The United Kingdom
