Burna Boy’s No Sign of Weakness Album Delivers Power, Growth, and Global Appeal
Nigeria’s Afrobeats powerhouse, Burna Boy has returned with a bang! His highly anticipated eighth studio album, No Sign of Weakness has been officially released, today July 11.
The album which was produced via Spaceship, Atlantic, and Bad Habit Records is one of the boldest mix of Afrobeat, rock, country, and hip‑hop genres. Burna Boy made this an all-in-one stop and sealed it with collaborations with some of the industry’s high profile musicians.
The artists, who are four in total include Belgian singer, Stromae, country-hop artist Shaboozey, American rapper Travis Scott, and English rock legend Mick Jagger.
The 16-track album has a long lineup of singles and collaborations. His feature with iconic artist Mick Jagger “Empty Chairs,” “Change Your Mind,” with Shaboozey and Travis Scott on the “TaTaTa” are some of the songs to look out for.
Apart from these, other standout singles include “Bundle by Bundle,” “Update,” and “Sweet Love”.
Recall that iNaijaNow recently posted about Burnaboy’s newfound interest in becoming a father, as announced during his recent birthday celebration.
For Burna Boy, this era is a story of his becoming. In an interview with AP News, Burna Boy reflected on his life-long dream of becoming a rock star. He recalled how he once stated that he “wanted to be a rock star” in school. He shared,
‘They would hand out the papers and the question would be, ‘What you wanna be?’ I’d write ‘rock star. One of my teachers asked me, ‘What do rock stars do?’ I didn’t really know what to say.”
He describes No Sign of Weakness as “a celebration of the fact that I’m still here throughout all these years and all the trials and tribulations”.
In over one decade, Burna Boy has evolved into one of Africa’s biggest exports in music. Alongside his famous Grammy award, the popular artist has won over global audiences and even made history as the first African artist to sell out Paris’ Stade de France in April.
This is an achievement he credits, in part, to the global ambitions and collaborations that his new album embodies.
Burna Boy isn’t stopping at the album. The No Sign of Weakness world tour is already selling out, with North American shows kicking off in November. He’s also featured on the soundtrack for the upcoming F1 film, demonstrating how his influence is stretching far beyond music charts and concert stages.
This album drop comes at a thrilling moment for world music. According to the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), Sub-Saharan Africa experienced the fastest growth in global music revenues in 2023, a trend driven predominantly by artists like Burna Boy, Davido, Tyla and Tems.
As the album’s success trails its release, Burna reflects on the future of African music. He says our music should be one “ that’s supposed to last, music that you can perform forever.”
He also expressed his desire to see more male artists unite to reach the top. According to him, “We need to figure out how to make our diversities into an advantage instead of a disadvantage, and that goes across not just for Nigeria, it goes for everything Black and African, because the only thing we always lack is strong organization.”
