Angela Okorie’s Armed Jog Triggers Police Response

Angela Okorie’s Armed Jog Sparks Police Backlash, Disciplinary Action Looms

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has publicly condemned the actions of some of its officers seen in a viral video escorting Nollywood actress Angela Okorie during a street jog, branding their conduct as unprofessional and inconsistent with the standards expected of the Force.

In the now widely circulated video, Angela Okorie is seen jogging in broad daylight, flanked by armed officers in uniform. What might have been intended as a show of celebrity status quickly turned into a topic of national discourse, sparking outrage across social media platforms. Many Nigerians criticized the deployment of armed personnel for what appeared to be a purely recreational or social activity, particularly in a country grappling with security shortages.

Reacting swiftly, the Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, released a strongly worded statement on Wednesday evening, expressing the NPF’s disapproval of the officers’ actions. According to the statement, “the conduct of the officers seen in the video falls short of the standards expected of members of the Nigeria Police Force.”

While there has been speculation that the video might have been captured on or around a movie set, the Police noted that this does not excuse the behavior observed. “Even if the scene was part of a scripted production, the visible presence and posturing of armed officers in such a context is unacceptable and erodes the decorum expected of law enforcement agents,” the statement read.

The Force further disclosed that an internal review has been initiated to identify the officers involved, investigate the circumstances surrounding the video, and apply disciplinary measures where necessary. “Administrative processes have been initiated, and appropriate disciplinary action will be taken based on the outcome of the review,” ACP Adejobi added.

The video has reignited a longstanding national conversation on the misuse of police escorts by celebrities and affluent individuals. For years, there have been calls for the Nigeria Police to reassess how its limited personnel are allocated, especially amid persistent complaints by ordinary citizens over delayed response to distress calls and understaffed stations in rural communities.

Critics argue that the apparent normalization of using police escorts for non-security-related activities paints the Force as elitist and unserious. In response, the NPF reiterated its commitment to professionalism and public accountability. “The Force remains committed to upholding discipline, professionalism, and public trust,” the statement concluded.

Angela Okorie, known for both her acting career and her often controversial social media presence, has not released an official statement addressing the incident as of the time of writing. Her silence, however, has not slowed the online backlash, with some commentators calling for a formal apology and others demanding that the Police Force publish the outcome of the investigation.

As the Nigeria Police continues its internal review, the case serves as a timely reminder of the urgent need to restore discipline, balance public perception, and ensure that the nation’s security resources are used in ways that serve the greater public good.
