PDP Moves to Unseat APC in 2027 as Atiku, Mark, Secondus Push for Opposition Alliance

2027- Atiku Mark Secondus Lead PDP Push for Mega Opposition Coalition Against APC

2027: Atiku, Mark, Secondus Lead PDP Push for Mega Opposition Coalition Against APC

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has launched a fresh push to unite opposition figures under one big coalition to challenge President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections.

Atiku met recently with ex-Senate President David Mark, former PDP National Chairman Uche Secondus, and other top party leaders in Abuja. The gathering, which they called a meeting of “Concerned PDP Leaders,” comes amid growing frustration within the main opposition camp.

In a communique read by David Mark after the closed-door session, the leaders described the APC government as a “national disaster” that had failed to deliver on its promises. According to them, all key sectors of Nigeria’s development, from security to the economy have crumbled under Tinubu’s leadership.

The PDP stalwarts didn’t just lament. They urged loyal party members and Nigerians across the political divide to join what they call an “emerging mega coalition.” Their goal is to build enough strength to win not just the presidency but state and national elections in 2027.

Key PDP heavyweights at the meeting included former governors Sule Lamido (Jigawa), Aminu Tambuwal (Sokoto), Liyel Imoke (Cross River), Babangida Aliyu (Niger), and Sam Egwu (Ebonyi). Former ministers Tom Ikimi, Josephine Anenih, and Inna Ciroma were present, as well as former PDP spokesperson Kola Ologbondiyan.

The communique laid out their plan: the coalition must stand on principles of national unity, democracy, security, economic revival, and a real political will to tackle corruption. They called on all partners to “work out the modalities of winning all elections, taking local and national peculiarities into account.”

While the PDP leaders talk unity, deep cracks persist in the opposition camp. Several PDP governors have distanced themselves from Atiku’s coalition effort. They argue that forming a new bloc could weaken the party and spark fresh defections.

Atiku, however, seems unfazed. He’s been reaching across party lines for months. He has reportedly engaged Labour Party’s Peter Obi, former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai, ex-Secretary to the Government of the Federation Babachir Lawal, and former Ogun governorship aspirant Segun Sowunmi.

The big question remains: what political platform will house this coalition? Earlier, reports suggested the group had applied to register a new party named the All Democratic Alliance (ADA). But new details reveal they have chosen the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as the coalition’s official platform. David Mark is tipped to serve as interim chairman until a formal unveiling, expected soon.

Many political watchers see this as the broadest opposition realignment since the APC merger in 2013. But unity might prove tricky. Peter Obi’s camp already denied reports that he would run as Atiku’s deputy in 2027. Several parties in the alliance, including the Labour Party, the New Nigeria Peoples Party, and the Social Democratic Party, battle their own internal rifts.

Within the PDP, the wounds from their last defeat remain fresh. The party’s struggle to rebuild since the exit of its former chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, has deepened its internal crises. Leaders at the Abuja meeting blamed both the APC’s “blackmail and patronage” tactics and poor leadership for the PDP’s woes.

Despite the challenges, Atiku and his allies remain optimistic. They insist Nigerians want change and believe the hardship under the current government will fuel support for a united front.
